On April 8, 2015, the Government of Aragon published the declaration of the Paisaje Protegido de la Sierra de Santo Domingo (Protected Landscape of the Sierra de Santo Domingo) . It is the first of the province of Zaragoza and the fourth of Aragon.
This news was the culmination of a long process that involved municipalities and other entities and that comes to recognize the important landscape and environmental value of this mountainous area between the Ebro Valley and the Pyrenees.
The Protected Landscape of the Sierra de Santo Domingo covers an area of almost 10,000 hectares that together with some 4,000 hectares of peripheral area make a total of almost 14,000 hectares of protected area. This area is divided between the municipalities of Biel-Fuencalderas, Longás and Luesia.
The environmental interest was already reflected in the existence in the zone of a ZEPA (Special Bird Protection Area) and 4 LIC zones (Places of Community Interest). The declaration of this Protected Landscape of the Sierra de Santo Domingo only confirms and reinforces this interest.
